Carwyn Jones, the First Minister of Wales, has personally welcomed the President of the United States of America, Barack Obama to Wales.

The two met as the First Minister welcomed delegations arriving at the Summit at the Celtic Manor in Newport this morning. The President earlier visited Mount Pleasant Primary School in Newport before travelling to the Summit itself.

The First Minister said: “The US President’s visit to Wales to attend the NATO summit in Newport is an historic occasion as it marks the first time that a serving US President has made an official visit to Wales.”

Sixty-seven Heads of Government from NATO member and partner countries were expected to attend the summit, together with Foreign and Defence Minister and other representatives.
