Politicians have got behind the ice bucket challenge craze that is saturating social media in aid of charity.
Islwyn MP Chris Evans took the challenge after being nominated by the Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Society, who have raised £3m from people throwing buckets of ice water over their heads.
The craze originated in America to raise awareness of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis a condition that affects nerve cells to the brain. However, a number of other charities and causes have benefitted from the phenomenon.
People take part in the challenge then nominate their friends to do the same, posting videos of it on Facebook.
Mr Evans is secretary of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Motor Neurone Disease so couldn’t back down when he was nominated and took part in the challenge outside his constituency office in Pontllanfraith on August 29.
He said: “Once I had the nomination from the MND Association, I had to take on the challenge.
“It is for a very worthy cause, and I was happy to get drenched if it raises awareness of motor neurone disease and the brilliant work the association is doing.”
Mr Evans was not the only local politician to take part in the challenge as Caerphilly’s AM and MP stepped up on the same day.
Jeff Cuthbert AM and Wayne David MP also raised money for the MND Society when they suffered the icy chill at Mr Cuthbert’s constituency office in Bargoed.
Caerphilly-born Arsenal and Wales star Aaron Ramsey, who is probably not averse to ice baths, also joined the craze, nominating Gareth Bale, Mike Phillips and Sylvester Stallone.
