The Caerphilly Local History Society has launched the latest edition of its journal.

The launch of its ninth journal took place on Saturday September 6 at Caerphilly Town Library.

It was the first book launch to be hosted at the £5.2 million building since it opened at the start of the year.

Richard Williams, chairman of the society since 2001, began proceedings with thanks to those who had participated in the book’s production.

These included Neil Sheppard of Premier Print, who had designed the striking cover free of charge. He also thanked the staff at Caerphilly Library for their hospitality.

After speaking about the book’s theme – a celebration of the people of Caerphilly – Mr Williams handed over to Cllr James Fussell, Caerphilly Town Mayor.

Cllr Fussell thanked the society for its continuing work on promoting and preserving the town’s history. He also commented favourably on the choice of local firms for the book’s production.

Next to speak was Caerphilly County Borough Mayor Cllr David Carter, who explained that he had just completed a degree in history at The Open University and was delighted to be at the launch of a local history book.

Caerphilly MP Wayne David then formally declared the launch and commended the choice of articles reflecting the experiences of local people.

He echoed historian E.P. Thompson’s words that this volume helped spare Caerphilly people from the “enormous condescension of posterity.”

The book sold well at the launch with 45 copies being snapped up on the day.
