Four young budding journalists have won a national reporting award after creating a news package about the dangers of deforestation.
Coed y Brain Primary School pupils Rosa, Rebecca, Freya and Megan won Sky Rainforest Rescue’s National Young Reporter Award for the inspiring video news report.
Sky News presenter Lorna Dunkley chose their entry as the winner in the video category of the I Love Amazon Schools competition.
The competition is a free initiative set up by Sky and the World Wildlife Federation (WWF) to give pupils greater understanding of the Amazon and find out why rainforests are crucial to the health of the planet.
The competition challenged the Llanbradach pupils to showcase their reporting skills by writing compelling news stories or producing films highlighting the issues faced by the Amazon rainforest.
Ms Dunkley said: “This is a very professional report and clearly a lot of thought has gone into the production of it.
“The presenters and reporters are very clear and confident in their delivery. Well done girls.”
The winners, all aged 11, were given £500 towards a green project at their school and family tickets to the Eden Project.
Winner Rebecca Davies said: “As well as developing my reading, writing and acting skills, it was great fun.”
Sky Rainforest Rescue is a partnership between Sky and WWF which began in 2009 and aims to help save one billion trees in the state of Acre, Brazil.
Experts believe that every minute, an area of Amazon forest the size of three football pitches is lost and global deforestation is responsible for up to 15% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions – that is roughly the same as all the world’s cars, planes, trains and ships put together.
As part of the initiative, primary school teachers can sign up for free resources and ideas to bring the Amazon to their classroom.
