Leisure centres could close across Caerphilly County Borough as part of a major shake-up of services.
Caerphilly County Borough Council has carried out a review of its leisure services and has recommended that “multifunctional” leisure centres should be located in Risca, Caerphilly, Newbridge and the Aberbargoed or Bargoed area.
The report, which can be found on the council’s website, details the condition and use of the council’s 11 leisure centres and recommends closing Cefn Fforest, Pontllanfraith, the Sue Noakes centre near Ystrad Mynach, Heolddu and New Tredegar.
The report recommends that new leisure centres be built in the Aberbargoed or Bargoed area and Caerphilly town.
The council is now seeking the views of residents on the strategy.
A council spokeswoman said: “The council currently operates 11 leisure centres with a mix of ‘joint use’ facilities located on school sites and those which are open to the public all day.
“A number of these buildings are ageing, while some sites are very small and offer limited activities and facilities for local people.
“In light of this, and recognising the importance of encouraging more people to lead healthy and active lifestyles, the council wants to develop a new vision of the delivery of its sport and leisure strategy in the future.
“A draft strategy document has been prepared, and the council is calling on residents to give their feedback on the proposals contained within.
“One of the key recommendations is that the council rationalises its existing facilities and focuses on providing four ‘multifunctional’ leisure centres in key locations across the county borough: Caerphilly; Newbridge; Risca; and the Upper Rhymney Valley.”
Another recommendation is to transfer the running of Rhymney Leisure Centre to Rhymney High School and the running of Bedwas Leisure Centre to Bedwas High School.
The report also reveals the number of people visiting leisure centres is on the rise.
In 2011/12, the number of visitors to leisure centres in the area was 1,148,368 and by 2012/13 this figure had risen to 1,277,952. In the 2013/14 financial year it was 1,290,343.
Residents have until May 1 to submit their views.
