A Welsh champion boxer from Nelson has been given a community award by Nelson Community Council.

Gavin Gwynne recently claimed the Welsh Amateur Boxing Association 64kg title and was presented with the award by the former Mayor of Caerphilly County Borough Cllr David Carter on May 11.

Mr Gwynne fights out of Nelson Boxing Club, which was converted into a gym from a snooker hall by the community council.

Chair of the community council, Cllr Kerry Jones, said: “There was some controversy at the time of our decision to allow the opening of the club, but this just goes to show we absolutely made the right decision.

“We are very proud of Gavin who has become a positive role model to younger members of the boxing club.”
