GEARED UP: Andrew Parry sets out from Land’s End

A firefighter who had his ankle rebuilt after breaking it three years ago has cycled from Land’s End to John O’Groats in just six days.

Andrew Parry, from Caerphilly, set out on May 21 and cycled as much as 187 miles a day to finish the 900 mile journey on May 26.

He set off at 6am most mornings on his bike, serviced by Castle Bikes in Trethomas, to raise money for the Wales Air Ambulance.

Mr Parry turns 44 this year and suffered a cyst on his eye just days before setting out, limiting his visibility.

He said: “It was mentally and physically tougher than I thought. I was breaking through the pain barrier every day.”

He cycled via Taunton, Crewe, Penrith, Edinburgh and Inverness and said “it was the thought that I needed to get to the next destination – that got me up in the mornings”.

Mr Parry, originally from Harlech, has already raised over £1,000 for the air ambulance via a Just Giving page and has several hundred pounds on top through sponsorship.

He hopes to raise £2,000, with fundraising events at Caerphilly Tesco, Morrisons and Asda, as well as at Cardiff Airport where he works.

Mr Parry thanked strangers who gave him water when he ran out and £10 for the cause.

To add to the total visit his Just Giving page.
