This year’s Caerphilly Challenge Series has been hailed a success by organisers.
The walking event, organised by Caerphilly County Borough Council, attracted around 550 people, with entrants coming from as far afield as Ireland to take on the mammoth ‘Twmbarlwm Trek’.
The series offers a variety of walking routes from the 21-mile Twmbarlwm Trek down to the more gentle one to five mile routes.
More than 70 volunteers from various walking groups across Caerphilly County Borough gave up their time to support fellow walkers.
These included Caerphilly Adventure Group, Islwyn Ramblers, Caerphilly Ramblers and the Pengam, Bedwas and Penallta Strollers.
Cllr Ken James Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Planning and Sustainable Development said: “The Caerphilly Challenge Series event really helps showcase the magnificent countryside and walking routes that our county borough has to offer, and it was great to see such an amazing turn out for this event once again this year.
“A big thank you to all that helped run the event and congratulations to everyone that completed the challenge”.
Among those participating in the Caerphilly Challenge Series was a group of young people from Caerphilly Youth Forum.
The group, aged between 13 and 19, took on the 10-mile walk, lacing up their boots to raise money for Velindre Cancer Centre.
The county borough’s Youth Champion Cllr Mike Prew added: “A huge well done to the group, who gave up their time to participate in this challenging event to raise money for an excellent cause. They should be very proud of themselves, and raised in excess of £500.”
A great event, I did the 15 miler. A shame the weather was so bad for the first couple of hours but it did not dampen the spirits of anyone I met on the walk and the sun did eventually come out.
The organisers of the Caerphilly Challenge Treks do an excellent job and in most years everything goes smoothly, even in bad weather as it was this year and last year.
