JAILED: Adam Mackie was sentenced to eight years in prison

A man who robbed Iceland in Caerphilly town, threatening colleagues at knifepoint, has been jailed for eight years.

Adam Mackie was 19 when he and a 15-year-old accomplice he recruited stole £1,000 from the store in an early morning raid on March 30.

During the raid a masked Mackie, of Pen y Cae, Caerphilly, told  a manager he “hated” to “take me to the safe or I’ll slit your throat”, Wales Online reported.

The only other colleague on duty at the store on Cardiff Road called 999 after escaping and locking herself in a storeroom.

Mackie was sentenced to eight years in prison at Cardiff Crown Court yesterday, June 17.

His 15-year-old accomplice, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was given two years detention and training.

Detective Inspector Ian Bartholomew, of Gwent Police, said: “This was a disturbing incident which was very distressing for the victims. Thankfully through good police work on the part of the officers who were first on the scene both individuals involved were quickly identified and then apprehended.

“I would also like to recognise the work of the detectives on this case who worked tirelessly to complete a thorough and professional investigation.

“Hopefully both offenders will now reflect on their actions and the effect their behaviour has had on others.”
