A project to turn the old Caerphilly Miners’ Hospital into a community hub has received a £22,000 cash boost.
Housing developer Lovell presented the money to the centre and Wayne David MP and Jeff Cuthbert AM, which will enable the completion of work to re-roof the hospital building and help complete the ground floor.
Lovell, along with housing association United Welsh, recently completed the building of 84 homes on the site, which opened in 1923 funded by weekly subscriptions from 10,000 miners who worked in the Rhymney Valley.
Katherine Hughes, company secretary of the Caerphilly Miners Centre for the Community charity, said: “We are very grateful for this donation which will make a huge difference to achieving our goal.
“Restoring a building like this has been a huge undertaking, but many people in our community are spurring us on, offering their time and contributing to the shaping of the project, which makes us very proud of our community resource.
“We hope that this lasting legacy of the miners will genuinely reflect our community’s hopes and aspirations.”
Lovell Area Manager Meurig Jones said: “It’s great to be able to support this impressive project which will see the hospital once again at the centre of Caerphilly life as an important community facility.”
