A Bedwas long-distance walker has completed a 1,100 mile journey around Wales to raise money for Velindre Cancer Centre, which provided support for his grandfather.

Gareth Axenderrie completed the walk after climbing Pen-y-Fan in Brecon on August 23 almost two months after setting off on June 7.

Mr Axenderrie took in the Welsh coastal path, Snowdown and the Brecon Beacons and has so far raised £3,000 for the charity.

Speaking after climbing Snowdon, Wales’ highest mountain, he said: “It’s been an incredible journey so far.
“It has without a doubt been the toughest thing I’ve ever done, but what I’ve experienced together with the amount I’ve raised for Velindre, has made every step worth it.”

Mr Axenderrie finished in Cardiff Bay on August 29, meeting his grandfather who inspired the trek and finishing the round trip.
