A hairdresser from Caerphilly has been honoured at the WorldSkills competition final in Brazil.

Following five days of intense competition at the WorldSkills final in São Paulo, against almost 1,000 of the world’s most skilled young people, Eleni Constantinou from Caerphilly has returned home with a Medallion for Excellence, scoring more than 500 points for her hairdressing skills.

WorldSkills is the world’s largest skills competition, which is held biennially around the globe to celebrate skills and share best practice between industries and countries.

Staged in August, WorldSkills São Paulo 2015 gave the world’s most talented young people the chance to battle it out to be named the best of the best in skills ranging from web design and aircraft maintenance to hairdressing and visual merchandising.

Eleni, 21 competed against 31 of the best hair stylists in the world and was recognised for her world-class skills with her score exceeding the international standard. Currently working in her family run salon Tino Constantinou Hairdressing, Eleni was one of four Welsh youngsters all aged between 19 and 21, selected to travel to Brazil and compete as part of Team UK.

Eleni said: “I felt that being selected for Team UK was an amazing achievement in itself, but I’m really pleased to have come home with a Medallion for Excellence and to be recognised for my skills in this way. Not a lot of people can put something like this on their CV.

“I’m so proud of my performance and the experience of the competition is something I’ll never forget.”

An excellent achievement. I met Eleni before she left for Brazil. I also mentioned her achievement when I was the guest speaker at the Vocational Skills awards in Cardiff City Stadium last Friday.
