OPEN DOORS: Visitors to Ruperra Castle enjoyed medieval re-enactments

More than 100 people attended an Open Doors event at Ruperra Castle on Sunday, September 6.

The building, near Lower Machen, is famous as a Pageant Castle and is one of only four such 17th Century castles left in Britain.

Built by Sir Thomas Morgan in 1626, the Grade II* listed building is now nothing more than a ruin.

The Open Doors event was held at the Barn at Ruperra Home Farm and began with a walk on the footpaths surrounding the castle, guided by conservationist architect John Thorneycroft.

The Ruperra Castle Preservation Trust organised the event in the stye of a medieval pageant.

It included a re-enactment display of medieval warfare, poetry and music.

I went for a walk around it a couple of years ago. It’s a beautiful old building and would be again with a bit of lotto money or some other type grant. Llanciach vawr is excellent and I’ve been on a number of occasions over the years, something similar would be great.
Even a privately owned commercial operation would be better than watching it fall apart.
I remember looking inside and seeing the remains of a beautiful stone stairwell. I thought about taking a closer look and I’m usually quite reckless with my own safety, but it was in such a state I thought better of it.
    A pity.
