The arms of Caerphilly County Borough will be a feature of the Royal Welsh Regiment’s dress for the next 25 years, it has been announced.
Councillor Leon Gardiner, the Mayor of Caerphilly County Borough Council, and Cllr Alan Higgs, the authority’s Armed Forces Champion, recently presented the regiment with a ceremonial belt for the Drum Major of the 3rd Battalion of the Royal Welsh.
Lieutenant Colonel Chris Kilmister, Regimental Secretary the Royal Welsh, said: “Caerphilly has been exceptionally supportive to the Regiment over the years and the granting of the Freedom of the Caerphilly in 2010 is just one example of that tremendous support.”
He added: “We hope that this bond between the Regiment and Caerphilly will last a very long time.”
Surely the Welsh Dragon would be more fitting?
You are right Dean, the probability is that the artificial
county borough will soon cease to exist. It presents an interesting scenario
where recruits, as yet unborn, will have to be told of the origins of the Court of Arms and the reason the Royal Welsh proudly wear it.
Thinking about that it is no bad thing, no more peculiar than many traditions that help make the British army the force it is; fiercely loyal to battalion and regiment (in that order)
