BEASTED: Private Gavin Williams died after being put through an informal punishment

An inquest into the death of a Hengoed soldier who died after being ‘beasted’, reopens today.

Private Gavin Williams, 22, collapsed at Lucknow Barracks in Wiltshire in 2006, after being put through the informal punishment known as ‘beasting’.

He died of heatstroke at Salisbury Hospital.

Three soldiers were cleared of his manslaughter in 2008, but his family called for the inquest into his death to be reopened.

Captain Mark Davis, who ordered the punishment, was not among the soldiers charged.

The inquest is being held at Salisbury Coroner’s Court and is expected to last six weeks.
