A primary school has held a double celebration to mark the opening of a new outdoor area and achieving a Platinum Eco Flag Award.

Penllwyn Primary School, in Pontllanfraith, has been recognised for its environmental efforts by charity Keep Britain Tidy.

The award, the highest available to schools, was presented to commemorate the hard work the school has put in to improve their environment over the last decade.

The new outdoor area was funded with a grant of nearly £30,000 from the Marillier Trust.

The money was used to create an outdoor all-weather classroom, an outdoor play area, a stage to encourage creative performance, a wooden train and a sports area.

The new outdoor facilities were officially opened by Caerphilly County Borough Mayor Leon Gardiner.

Cllr Ken James, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Planning and Sustainable Development, said: “I am thrilled that Penllwyn Primary School was able to secure funding for their new outdoor facilities, which I hope will bring joy to pupils for many years to come. Thank you to the Marillier Trust for their very kind donation.”
