Residents of Cwmfelinfach and Wattsville to stage council protest against recycling plant

News | | Published: 12:23, Wednesday December 9th, 2015.

Residents of Cwmfelinfach and Wattsville are to stage a protest outside Caerphilly county Borough Council’s offices tonight ahead of a decision over whether a controversial recycling plant is built.

People have objected to a scheme by Hazrem Environmental Ltd to build a plant at Nine Mile Point Industrial Estate citing a increase in local traffic and a weather phenomenon called temperature inversion, when cold air is trapped in the valley by the warm air above. There are also fears emissions from vehicles may also be trapped by the warm air.

The plant, if built, would process up to 100,000 tonnes of waste annually.

A report for Hazrem Environmental said the site would have a “negligible” impact on air quality.

The planned site would turn household, commercial and industrial waste, usually headed for landfill into bales of fuel.

A Caerphilly council spokesman said: “As with all planning applications, residents’ views, comments and objections will be considered by the council as part of the planning process”.
