Residents from Cwmfelinfach and Wattsville are “angry, annoyed, and bitter” after plans to build a waste centre at Nine Mile Point Industrial Estate were approved.

The plant, being developed by Hazrem Environmental Ltd, will process up to 100,000 tonnes of waste annually and residents from the two villages argue it will have a detrimental impact on the environment. They cited an increase in traffic and a weather phenomenon called temperature inversion as reasons for objection.

Weather inversion happens when cold air is trapped in the valley by the warm air above. There are fears emissions from vehicles may also be trapped by warm air. coming from the centre.

A report for Hazrem Environmental said the site would have a “negligible” impact on air quality, but Ynysddu councillor Jan Jones said residents felt their views were ignored by the planning committee, which approved the plans on Wednesday, December 9.

She said: “We are very disappointed as we thought we had some very good planning reasons why it shouldn’t be passed.”

She added: “Residents are very angry and upset and feel they have been totally ignored.”

I cannot believe the council have approved the waste centre at Cwmfelinfach. Have they tried using that road around 4- 5pm in the afternoon !! and that road is not suitable to have so many lorries on the winding road through Wattsville ,Cwmfelinfach and Ynysddu. I wonder how many of these councillors who approved the application live in the area affected. I am sure not many of them if any. Would be interested to know what time of day they would have viewed the potential site. Probably not when children are walking home from school or rush hour when people queue from full moon roundabout to use the road.
