Morgan Gwyther help with some tree planting
Pupils from Abertysswg, Phillipstown and White Rose primary schools and Rhymney Comprehensive School have been busy planting more than 400 trees to celebrate National Tree Week.
The planting took place recently at Coed McLaren in Abertysswg.
Over the past three years, 25,000 trees have been planted at the site, funded by the Welsh Governments PLANT! Initiative, which aims to create new native Welsh woodlands
Cllr Ken James, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Planning and Sustainable Development said: “The success of the PLANT! project has grown year on year and it all comes down to the hard work of the Environmental Rangers and Countryside team who work in partnership with the local community.
“It is vital to teach people about eco-friendly living and the importance of woodlands at an early age and working with local schools has allowed us to inspire the pupils to be more green and consider the environment.”
I planted a dozen acorn shoots in some old pots with some homemade compost last year and they’ll be ready next autumn. All you have to do is water them the same time as your baskets and go for a invigorating walk up the mountain once every two years to plant them. Easy, get your kids involved, more trees, more oxygen etc etc.
Good idea. An oak planted by my father about 45 years ago is now a handsome tree.
I’m paraphrasing an old story here but a squirrel used to be able to climb a tree on the south coast and travel all the way to Scotland without setting foot on the ground because of all the trees. Massive amounts of oak were planted for the navy ship building and many still stand because of obvious reasons. I think they should show the French story ” The man who planted trees” in schools.
Yes, I know the story, inspiring.
