Islwyn MP criticises welfare cuts to the terminally ill

News | | Published: 09:00, Wednesday February 10th, 2016.

Islwyn MP Chris Evans has criticised the UK Government’s decision to freeze employment and support allowance for the terminally ill, after a recent House of Lords vote.

On Monday, January 25, the House of Lords voted against an amendment to the Welfare Reform and Work Bill which would have prevented a freeze on employment and support allowance for four years.

This means that terminally ill people, including those with motor neurone disease, will be £250 a year worse off by 2019/20.

The Welfare Reform and Work Bill, which is now at report stage in the House of Lords, would see benefit caps and freezes which are expected to reduce spending on state support by between £8 billion and £9bn.

Mr Evans said: “It is shocking and saddening that the Government has decided to freeze the support terminally ill people will get for four years even though living costs are continuing to rise.

“People with motor neurone disease and other terminal illnesses have enough to worry about without the prospect of financial difficulties. The government seems intent on slashing away support for working families, children, the vulnerable and the sick without a thought for the human consequences.”

So, What does chris Evans, and The Labour Party intend to do about it, It seems Labour politicians have been sitting on thier hands on this one, where is the local publicity on it from the Labour Party in respect to those local Terminally Ill residents to be effected?

The Labour Party are left footed at every turn in respect to such issues, they are failing labour, and none labour, citizens, by their clear lack of proactivity and curcumspection and second rate Government Scrutiny in their role as the Government Official Opposition. This article does NOTHING to promote confidence that these people are doing thier jobs, or are totally ineffective in doing it.

  • A new health board initiative is changing the way menopause care is delivered in GP surgeries across Gwent. The Menopause Champions Project, introduced in June this year by Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, aims to give patients going through menopause better access to informed and consistent support from their local practice teams. The scheme was developed by Dr Jayne Forrester-Paton, a menopause and sexual and reproductive health specialist, alongside Dr Michelle Olver, clinical lead of the menopause team, and nurse consultant Nikki Noble. Together, they set out to equip GPs and practice nurses with up-to-date knowledge and practical tools to improve care. So far, 41 GP practices in the region now have a trained “Menopause Champion” — a clinician who can provide advice and guidance on both hormonal and non-hormonal treatment options. These champions are backed by a network of colleagues and specialists to help them stay confident in managing more complex cases. Dr Forrester-Paton said the project had already made a strong start and would continue to grow: “We are proud of how successful this project has been so far and will continue to grow, with plans to expand educational sessions for clinicians, offer virtual case discussions to improve care for complex menopause cases and strengthen the collaboration between primary care and specialist menopause services. “The Menopause Champions Project is helping to ensure that menopause is treated with the same care and attention as any other health issue, giving patients the support they need, when they need it.”
