Radio 1 DJ Greg James passed through Caerphilly today, Tuesday February 9, as part of his Sport Relief challenge.
The presenter is attempting to complete a triathlon a day for five consecutive days around five different UK cities – including Cardiff – to raise money for the charity.
As Greg set off this morning he said: “I’m really tired today, I didn’t factor in the travelling between cities in the evening. If it was in one city it might have been easier but it’s not meant to be easy.
“It’s all for such an important cause though – imagine if you woke up this morning and your house had been destroyed and you just had to flee. Essentially that is what has happened to Syrian refugees.
“It’s so heart-breaking and that is why I am being spurred on to do this. This challenge is very difficult but there are no half measures from me, I’ve got to go for it, so Sport Relief can use the money to help those in need.”
Yesterday he covered over 50 miles of ground, tackling an 800m swim, a 40-mile cycle and a 9.8 mile run.
Today, Greg ran from Cardiff Bay to BBC Wales in Llandaff. He then cycled to Nelson, down to Ystrad Mynach and Llanbradach and then through Caerphilly town as he made his way back to Cardiff Bay for the final swimming leg of his challenge.
He had originally been due to take a rest at Penyrheol Community Centre, but organisers said yesterday’s bad weather with Storm Imogen meant a last-minute change of course.
As of this morning, the DJ has raised £82,195 – far in excess of his initial target of £25,000.
