Blackwood Miners’ Institute has become the first accredited “Dementia Friendly” theatre in Wales.
The arts venue has become dementia friendly following several months of working with charity the Alzheimer’s Society.
Marina Newth, Deputy Theatre Manager, said: “At Blackwood Miners’ Institute, we believe that the arts should be accessible for everyone.
“The theatre provides a wide range of opportunities for people from all sectors of the community to take part and engage.”
The Alzheimer’s Society has provided advice, support and training to enable staff at Blackwood Miners’ Institute to become “Dementia Friends”.
Ian Thomas, Dementia Friendly Community Coordinator said: “Dementia Friends aims to help people live well with dementia.
This requires taking actions in every sector of the community, as one of the hardest things for people living with dementia is the isolation and the feeling of inability to do the things they enjoy.
“Venues like Blackwood Miners’ Institute will lead the way in supporting families living with the condition to enjoy cultural events and feel safe.”
Cllr Ken James, Cabinet Member for Regeneration said: “Blackwood Miners’ Institute is committed to ensuring that it is an accessible and welcoming environment to all visitors and I am delighted that they have become the very first accredited Dementia Friendly theatre in Wales.
“Congratulations to everyone involved in this fantastic achievement.”
According to the Alzheimer’s Society, 850,000 people in the UK have dementia, which is estimated to increase to one million by 2025.
