New Senghenydd mural marks village’s mining history

Pupils from Nant y Parc Primary School have unveiled a new community-inspired mural in Senghenydd which honours the victims of the 1901 and 1913 Universal Colliery explosions.

The mural, which was painted by Cardiff artist Bryce Davies, has been unveiled on the railway bridge next to the Abercycle Way, a popular route with residents and walkers.

Mr Davies said: “I would like to thank the whole community in Senghenydd, particularly the school pupils who provided design inspiration and the local residents who supported the project with their positive comments and encouragement.

“Hopefully, this will contribute to the history, wellbeing and sense of place for residents of the village”.

Cllr Nigel George, Cabinet member for Community and Leisure Services said: “I would like to thank the pupils of Nant y Parc Primary for supporting this environmental improvement project.

“The artwork has received positive feedback from local residents and users of the cycle way and reflects well on the village as a great place to visit and enjoy.”

The 1913 explosion was, and remains, Britain’s worst mining disaster. The final death toll was 439 miners and one rescuer.

In 1901, 81 men were killed and the mine’s safety procedures were criticised in a subsequent report.
