Gwent Police is appealing for information following a distraction burglary in Machen, and have issued advice to residents following a recent rise in reported incidents.
The burglary took place at around 5.40pm on Wednesday March 30, at a house on Glan Yr Afon, Machen.
The resident, a 92-year-old woman, answered her door to a man claiming that his ball was in her back garden.
Whilst the she accompanied the man to the garden, police believe a second man entered the property.
After the lady was distracted for around ten minutes, the first man left in a red car.
The occupant was unharmed, but shaken, and later realised that a substantial amount of money had been stolen from her home.
The man who called at the address is described as: white, around 20 years old, of slight build with dark short hair and a local accent.
Anyone with information can call 101 quoting log: 375 30/03/16.
Gwent Police has issued advice to residents about how to deal with unwanted callers.
“Unfortunately these days not everyone who calls at your door is who they seem to be – so you should always be on your guard. Follow the three step plan:
“1. If in doubt keep them out – It sounds simple, but if you don’t let someone in – they will go away. Don’t let them pressure you into opening the door.
“2. Be prepared. Be in control – Think about what to say to doorstep cold callers in advance. And keep a list of key contact numbers near your phone so you can check out legitimate callers. Ask all other unwanted callers to go away.
“3. Call a neighbour or the police – Contact a local relative or nominated neighbour who can help verify a cold caller. If you think someone is a rogue trader call us on 101. To report a distraction burglar or rogue trader who has taken your money and is still in the area – call 999.”
For Gods sake not again, yet more role model citizens going about their God given right to prey on the elderly. Its about time that decent people got together to stop these dregs of society. It really is beyond belief that in this day and age we still tolerate this type of behaviour towards our elderly population.
Another unacceptable `crime` committed against senior community citizens.
The answer of course is for everyone to see policemen and women walking the streets, the Caerphilly Council`s Street Wardens could help too, if they only got out of the vans they are provided with, let these criminals see a `uniform` walking the streets, and they will move out of the area, they DO NOT WANT TO BE RECOGNISED.
The police Advice ; `Keep them out`, how on earth can a 92 year old, or infirm, or sick or disabled senior citizen `keep them out`, the advice appears to suggest that they ensure they are locked away in their own homes at all times.
`Ask callers to go away` Some hope.
Phone 101, ever tried to do so lately, and get a quick response, which would be needed in such situations, perhaps the police ought to have more confidence in their own abilities to help and assist these victims, and catch these criminals in the act, by advising people who find themselves in the situation this lady and at least one other local senior citizen found himself in and, to PHONE 999.
I agree completely. I told our chief inspector, last month, that I would not advocate phoning 101 because the system is useless. My contribution did not go down well but I have always believed in speaking the truth rather than pretending that all is well.
I will repeat this advise on ‘Caerphilly Observer’ Please do not phone 101 as you will be kept waiting for more than half an hour. If you see anything suspicious phone 999. If anyone from the police wants to take issue with my advice I will be pleased to meet them and produce evidence of the way that the 101 system is useless.
Another despicable vile act against a decent elderly person, an honourable person who most probably worked during the war to help Britain in the fight against the enemy, and this is how modern society repays her. These crimes should not be tolerated, this evil is the result of years of political correct nonsense and soft left wing do-gooders, the pond life who are responsible have no place in society, they should be wiped of the face of the earth.
Skumbags are at it again – Everybody needs to be aware, if you have elderly relatives or neighbours please check on them daily. These skumbags need to be caught, report anything suspicious by dialling 999 and help catch the skum.
These skumbags can finish off the elderly who will be traumatised for the rest of their lives .
So we are all looking for:
2 male skum bags with local accents
1 aged around 20 with black hair
Red car
keep a look out peeps
Go get them ………….
