Labour keeps seats in Moriah and Ynysddu by-elections

News | | Published: 12:28, Monday April 18th, 2016.

Labour has retained its seats in two recent council by-elections.

David Harse was elected as the new councillor for the Moriah ward on March 31, while Phillipa Marsden took Ynysddu on April 7.

Cllr Harse, who got 464 votes, said: “It was hard work in the by-election but at the end of the day the supporters were behind me and I was overjoyed by the majority I had over the other candidates.

“My plans are to do the best I can to serve my community.”

Coming second in Moriah was independent candidate Peter Bailie with 189 followed by another independent candidate Mervyn Diggle with 89.

The turnout for the by-election, which was called following the death of Cllr Gina Bevan, was 27%.

In Ynysddu, Cllr Marsden received 502 votes beating UKIP’s Joe Smyth on 180, followed by Plaid Cymru’s Marina Dawn Pritchard with 134. Liberal Democrat candidate Matthew John Kidner got 36 votes.

The by-election was called after former councillor Colin Durham resigned in January this year citing work commitments.

This is the First time i voted in a long while and what I must say is that Joe Smyth was the only representative that bothered knocking peoples doors and was the main reason why he got my vote, Labour sadly believe its their god given right to automatically win any election in the old Islwyn quarters…
