The Member of Parliament for Islwyn, Chris Evans, has paid tribute to the Queen’s years of public service after speaking at the lighting of a beacon on Twmbarlwm Mountain as part yesterday’s birthday celebrations.
The beacon lighting ceremony, which was organised by Risca Town Council in association with The Twmbarlwm Society, included words from Prince Charles and the national anthems of the UK and Wales. Attendees also sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to the Queen in celebration of her 90th Birthday.
After the lighting of the beacon a buffet and celebration party was held at Risca Rugby Club. More than 1,000 similar events were held across the country on Thursday evening.
Mr Evans said: “I would like to thank Risca Town Council and The Twmbarlwm Society for organising this fantastic event.
“Her Majesty, The Queen, is our finest and most exemplary public servant. For more than 64 years she has represented not just our country but many others in the commonwealth with unfaltering dedication, duty and care.
“Regardless of anyone’s views on the monarchy, The Queen truly sets the standard for Heads of State across the world. I hope she has had a fantastic day and has many more to come.”
