Detectives investigating a possible murder in Ystrad Mynach have been granted a further 36 hours to question a 47-year-old man.

Police were called by the Welsh Ambulance Service to an address near Ystrad Mynach railway station, in Nelson Road, at 5.45pm on Tuesday, May 3.

On arrival, the body of a 75-year-woman was found. Gwent Police has named the woman as Iris Owens and continue to appeal for potential witnesses.

A 47-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder is being quizzed by detectives. A warrant of further detention was applied for at Newport Magistrates’ Court yesterday and granted. This means police can question the suspect until 11.10pm tonight, Friday, May 6.

A Gwent Police spokesperson said: “Officers are reminding local residents and commuters, if you used Ystrad Mynach train station at any time on Tuesday May 3 or if you know Iris Owens, you may be able to assist with our enquiries. Please get in touch by calling 101 and quoting log 363 03/05/2016.”
