A cider producer has been named Best Drinks Producer in the Radio 4 Food and Farming Awards.

Hallets Real Cider, made by Annie and Andy Hallett on their farm in Crumlin, was the only Welsh producer to be nominated in the category.

The pair were awarded the prestigious national prize at a ceremony in Bristol last month.

Andy said: “I’m very proud to have put our small village in Wales on the food map.

“Hearing critically acclaimed food experts compliment our cider and recognise its quality is quite overwhelming.

“Thank you to everyone who nominated us, and to everyone who has helped us get this far. Who knows what’s next.”

Guardian wine columnist Fiona Beckett, who was one of the category’s judges, said Hallets was “the most beautiful cider she had tasted” adding “that it provides serious competition to good wines and so deserves a place on the nation’s dinner tables”.

Welsh food and drinks producers won three of the seven awards, and the Welsh flag was literally flown by supporters in the audience. Best Food Producer went to Charcutier Ltd from Carmarthenshire and Best Food Market went to St Dogmaels Local Producers Market in Pembrokeshire.
