Caerphilly County Borough Council is warning residents to make early plans ahead of the return of the controversial Velothon Wales cycle event on Sunday May 22.

The event is expected to see up to 15,000 cyclists take to roads across South Wales, with the 140km route passing through Newbridge, Pontllanfraith, Ystrad Mynach, Llanbradach and Caerphilly town.

Some main roads in Caerphilly county borough will be completely closed to traffic for long periods throughout the day, with several closures in place between 8.30am and 6.00pm.

Full details about the road closures, along with an interactive route map, can be found at www.velothon-wales.co.uk.

Last year’s event was the subject of contention, with numerous road closures angering residents, leading to a small amount of tacks being thrown onto the route at New Road, Caerphilly.

A council spokesperson said: “Due to the scale of the event, it will be necessary to implement road closures along the length of the 140km route to allow the safe passage of the participants.

“Residents are urged to plan ahead and make alternative arrangements wherever possible. Anyone with issues on the day, such as formal events, carer responsibilities or holiday travel, should contact the Velothon helpline on 029 21 660 790.

“The organisers will do all they can to assist and provide more information on how to best navigate around the road closures.”

Changes to local public transport services can be found on the CCBC website: http://www.caerphilly.gov.uk/Services/Transport-and-parking/Velothon-Cymru-bus-service-disruptions.
