Charity criticises van driver over “dangerous” video stunt

Road safety charity Brake has strongly criticised an online video which shows a recovery van ‘drifting’ around a roundabout.

The video of the stunt, posted on Facebook, depicts the vehicle, with flashing amber lights, sliding its rear wheels out on the roundabout, believed to be near Blackwood.

Brake described the act as irresponsible, reckless and potentially lethal and have called on the police to investigate.

Jack Kushner, spokesperson for Brake, said: “This video shows a clear example of reckless driving.

“It is hard to imagine why a driver would take such irresponsible risks, and show such little consideration for other road users.

“Driving in this manner is potentially lethal, and we would call on the police to prosecute this individual.

“As a charity that supports bereaved and injured road crash victims, we know only too well the devastating effect that dangerous driving has, which is why the sharing of such foolish footage on social media is so appalling.”

Blackwood Sergeant Tony Watkins said: “We will make every effort to identify the driver, vehicle and location of the incident.

“Motoring offences such as careless, reckless and dangerous driving are taken very seriously by the police. These offences place other drivers and members of the public at risk with consequences of serious injuries or even a fatality.

“I urge anyone who has any information regarding the vehicle or the identity of the driver to please call Gwent Police by dialling 101.

“I’d also like to remind motorists, they should report erratic driving, dangerous loads, unroadworthy vehicles or hazards on the road by phoning 999 as soon as you safely can.

“Write down the registration number of any vehicle involved, with a description of the make, colour and, if possible, who was driving.”

Perhaps it’s Chris Evans filming for the new series of Top Gear. If I stopped to report every instance of erratic driving I see on the public highway I’d never get to Aldi before it closed, at least matey in his recovery wagon displayed a degree of vehicle control which is more than can be said for the majority of dimwits on our roads.
