Gwent Police and Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Trading Standards team are warning residents over a telephone tax scam.
Officers are investigating messages left on residents’ phones which asks them to call a number as they owe tax.
Upon calling the number, residents are told they “owe a large sum of tax” and are asked how much they are able to pay today, and over subsequent months.
The caller then instructs the resident to go to a store and purchase iTunes vouchers to the value of what they have stated they can afford to pay that day.
Caerphilly County Borough’s Trading Standards team are keen to remind residents they should not give out personal or financial information to anyone that they do not completely trust.
For advice or to report an issue to the council’s Trading Standards team, call 01495 235 291 or visit www.caerphilly.gov.uk. Issues of this nature can also be reported to Gwent Police by calling 101.
