A group of 26 volunteers recently collected more than 200 bags of waste on Gelligaer Common, as part of the council’s Big Spring Clean initiative.

The volunteers came from a number of organisations, including Keep Wales Tidy, Gelligaer and District Young Farmers Club, and Fly-Tipping Action Wales amongst others as they braved differing conditions to tackle waste on Gelligaer and Merthyr Commons.

Along with the bags of rubbish, several tonnes of larger items including tyres and commercial waste were collected.
The clean-up took place following a meeting of the Cwm a Mynydd Agricultural Network, which is funded by the Welsh Government Rural Communities Programme.

Julie Smith, a member of the Caerphilly Activity Group and volunteer on the day, said: “It is so sad that our beautiful countryside is seen by some as a place to dump their rubbish. This land is our heritage and we should protect it, not destroy it.”
