A firefighter from Caerphilly has been given a hero’s welcome after returning from a gruelling 1500 mile round journey from Cardiff to Spain, raising nearly £2,000 for cancer charity Velindre.

Andrew Parry, 44, cycled unassisted from Cardiff Airport – where he works – to Santander, in the north of Spain, to raise money for Velindre after losing his grandmother to cancer.

Last year, Mr Parry cycled 900 miles from Land’s End to John O’Groats for Wales Air Ambulance, and had his ankle rebuilt four years ago.

Before leaving for Santander, he admitted it was a daily source of pain.

Having cycled through Portsmouth, France, the Pyrenees, Andorra, and Barcelona on his way to the city, Mr Parry was met by friends and members of Caerphilly Cycling Club at Caerphilly Railway Station on his return on Tuesday, June 14.

Mr Parry is one of the founding members of the club, which meets at the Tommy Cooper statue in Caerphilly town before each session.
