Work on a new artificial sports pitch at Caerphilly’s £20m Y Gwyndy school campus has begun, signalling the start of the final stage of the development.

The installation of a new 3G style rugby and football pitch marks stage four of the school campus development, which will house pupils from both Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Caerffili and Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni, and will provide an area playable on throughout the winter months.

The new artificial pitch will be fenced and flood lit, with a specialised area next to it for a number of field sports including long-jump and shot-put.

Cllr Derek Havard, Cabinet Member for Education and Lifelong Learning said: “The new 3G pitch at the Y Gwyndy campus will provide Caerphilly with another fantastic resource which can be used by both pupils and the wider community.

“The pitch will provide a consistent surface suitable for a variety of sports which can be used in most weathers. Thank you to Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Building Consultancy Team for their fantastic design and to the contractors Andrew Scott Ltd for carrying out the works.”

The project was funded 50% by Welsh Government and the other 50% by Caerphilly County Borough Council as part of the 21st Century Schools Programme.

Good news, it will be great for the pupils and hopefully will be able to be used by the local community also.
