Pupils from Bryn, Derwyn Deg and T? Sign Primary Schools were invited to Caerphilly County Borough Council’s headquarters on Thursday July 14 to be presented with awards for a recent speed awareness project.
Deputy Mayor Cllr Bevan, Cabinet Member Cllr Tom Williams and Head of Engineering Services Terry Shaw met with pupils and teachers at Penallta House to reveal the winners of a project to design a 20mph poster to be displayed outside their schools.
The schoolchildren were given creative license, with the only brief that the posters should incorporate the theme of slowing down to the 20mph limit.
Esther Knight-Webley from Bryn Primary, Hollie Seldon and Megan Sweet, from Derwen Deg Primary and Callum Martin from Ty Sign Primary School were revealed as winners.
Susan J Davies, Road Safety Project Officer, said: “The standard of entries was exceptional which made it a very difficult job for the Road Safety team and engineers to pick winners.”
All very well but children need to be taught road safety and how and where to cross a road safely. They should not be taught that a vehicle will slow down for them, I’m all for obeying speed limits but pedestrians need to take responsibility for themselves and stop treating drivers like evil demons who are out to kill anybody who dares to go near a road, us drivers have actually studied the highway code and passed a test that allows us to drive a vehicle on the public highway – we’re not all stupid idiots.
Bryn Primary have Curb Craft classes to teach road safety to their pupils, I thought that all primary schools did these classes.
Curb Craft….which consultancy firm were paid handsomely by the council to come up with that one! What’s wrong with the green cross code and a squirrel called Tufty, whatever it’s called I hope it’s being taught to all kids and they pay attention, we used to have the police come around and show us in graphic detail what happens to a person who’s been run over – short sharp shock did the trick but probably not PC anymore.
