A Pontllanfraith woman has celebrated reaching her 100th birthday.

Eva Bram celebrated the milestone with friends, family and a choir at Gilwern House Care Home.

Mrs Bram was born on August 12, 1906, in Pentwynmawr.

As a child, she went to the local primary school and then attended Greenfield School in Newbridge.

When Mrs Bram was very young, her mother passed away, leaving her to care for her grandfather and take care of the household.

When she was 21, she met her first boyfriend Fred. The pair married in 1940 and lived in Oakdale, where Fred worked at the colliery.

They had two sons, Colin and Alan, and the family moved to Pontllanfraith, and later celebrated the arrival of three grandchildren – Julie, Neal and Sharron.

Fred passed away in 1987 and in 1990, son Alan and his wife took Mrs Bram to Borneo – an unforgettable trip that is still talked about.

After being taken to hospital earlier this year, she eventually moved into the residential home in March.

Her favourite choir, Mynydd Islwyn, joined in with the celebration as did Blackwood Town Mayor Noel Turner.

Staff from the nearby Sainsbury’s supermarket also visited her and brought her flowers to mark the occasion.
