Three councillors are campaigning to bring post office services back to Pontllanfraith after local residents watched two branches close in the space of a year.
Pontllanfraith Labour councillors Gez Kirby, Colin Gordon, and Mike Adams are calling on the Post Office to return services after branches in Commercial Street, Pontllanfraith and Fleur-De-Lys Avenue, Pentllwyn closed in December 2015 and July 2016 respectively.
Cllr Kirby said: “A local post office is the heart of the community. Both branches were popular with residents, especially pensioners, who’d chat with staff and rely on and use the services.
“The closest branch is now two miles away in Blackwood, where there’s regular waiting times and queues. We need a branch back in the village.”
Both former sites of the Pontllanfraith and Pentllwyn branches are still vacant units.
There has also been a suggestion that Sainsbury’s Pontllanfraith could house any potential return for postal services.
Campaigners collected signatures outside Sainsbury’s on Saturday, August 6, and are running an online petition alongside the physical copy.
Cllr Kirby added: “We’re aiming for 500 signatures. We’ve got over 200 written signatures, over 100 online, and plan to present it to the Post Office in the coming weeks and await a response. The demand is certainly there.”
