Two life-long friends will embark upon a huge challenge to raise money for three charities championing disability enablement.

Kayaking close to 400 miles around Wales’ coastline, Ben Bostock and Tom Clark, both 29, hope to raise £10,000 for Bobath Cymru, Disability Can Do, and Camarthenshire People First.

The pair will set off on the first of their 13 legs on Saturday, August 27, from Newborough, Anglesey, and pending weather and tidal conditions hope to finish at Cardiff Bay on Saturday, September 10.

Tom works as an advocacy manager for Pontllanfraith-based charity Disability Can Do, and has known Ben, who has cerebral palsy, since birth.

He said: “The thing that ultimately makes the biggest difference to someone with a disability is their own attitude to life and the attitude of those around them.

“Everyone in life has strengths and weaknesses and someone with a disability is no different. If, as a society, we focused more on empowerment, enablement and ability then we would all be better off. This is what this trip is about.”

Ben’s condition commonly affects muscular coordination, mobility and speech among other things. As a child, this affected his ability to move and maintain posture.

Ben said: “This challenge means a lot and is a natural result of growing up with a disability and wanting to make the most of what I have and hopefully encourage others to do the same.”
