Council offices will fly Red Ensign flag to mark Merchant Navy Day

News | | Published: 11:00, Friday August 26th, 2016.

Caerphilly County Borough Council’s headquarters Penallta House will mark Merchant Navy Day on Friday, September 2, by flying the Red Ensign flag.

Maritime charity Seafarers UK have called on local authorities to fly the flag of the UK Merchant Navy from public buildings and landmark flagstaffs to raise awareness of the UK’s ongoing dependence on Merchant Navy seafarers.

At 9.00am on Friday September 2 Cllr Keith Reynolds, Leader of CCBC, will lead the service at Penallta House, as the flag flies for the duration of the weekend.

The ceremony will be attended by Mayor of CCBC, Cllr Dianne Price, local politicians, and Sea Cadets.

Cllr. Keith Reynolds, leader of Caerphilly County Borough Council said, “I am pleased that we are once again supporting Merchant Navy Day. We are great supporters of the armed forces here in Caerphilly and continuing to take part in this nationwide event highlights our respect for those who serve, and those who have served in the past.”

Merchant Navy Day takes place nationwide on Saturday September 3.
