Emergency closure of Pontgwindy Road, Caerphillly

UPDATE: Pontygwindy Road re-opened.

Caerphilly County Borough Council has implemented an emergency closure on Caerphilly town’s Pontygwindy Road to repair a damaged culvert underneath the road surface.

The road was closed yesterday, Tuesday, August 30, and the council has estimated that repair work will take between two and three weeks to complete.

The location of the closure is between the Pwllypant (Cedar Tree) roundabout and the access road to the Catnic site. A diversion is in place and the council has said it will endeavour to complete the works as quickly as possible.

Motorists are urged to find alternative routes if possible and the council has apologised for any inconvenience caused.

They’ll probably say it is going to take 4 weeks then suddenly get it done next week to make their completion statistics look good. I might just be kidding…Who knows?

My mother lived in London from 1936 onward and endured the ordeal of German bombing known as ‘The Blitz’. I remember her telling me that she once passed a railway station on the way to work where the tracks were torn up and twisted and bomb craters were everywhere. By the time she went home all the lines were repaired and trains were running.

I know there is not a war on but this route is a vital artery for the town and two to three weeks sounds excessive. Perhaps you are right and things will be back to normal by next week.
