Around 1,500 people braved the poor weather over the August Bank Holiday weekend to attend the 2016 Megaday charity music festival.

The 22nd Megaday took place at Caerphilly RFC’s Constructaquote.com stadium at Virginia Park, and raised thousands of pounds for Velindre Cancer Centre.

The annual festival is held in memory of local musicians Andrew Nichols, who was known as Mega, and Paul Grahame, who sadly both lost their lives to cancer, and was established by their friend Steve Sullivan.

This year’s event began on Saturday, August 27, with Megaday Presents Mega Decades – a celebration of different musical styles from the 1920s onwards.

Twelve live bands then took to the stage for the main event on Sunday.

Since it began in 1995, the event has raised £292,000, excluding the uncounted funds for this year.
The night ended, as always, with a spectacular firework display.

Megaday organiser Peter Hopkins said: “The rain didn’t dampen the spirits of the Megaday crowd with almost 1,500 people attended over the weekend.

“Megaday is as popular as ever and its success is down to the support of volunteers, businesses and the good people of Caerphilly and surrounding areas.

“We would like to thank the community once again for supporting us in our fundraising for Velindre Cancer Centre after a hugely successful Megaday weekend.”

Andrew Morris, Head of Fundraising at Velindre, praised the event for all it has done over the years.

He said: “People in Caerphilly support Megaday year after year, and it doesn’t ‘just happen’.

“It is all done to the incredible hard work of the organisers and volunteers who hold the event in memory of two very special musicians.”

• On Sunday, September 4, around 50 people are taking part in the 11-mile ‘Mega Run’ to raise funds for Velindre.
Starting at Caerphilly Castle, the team of runners will make their way along the Taff Trail to Cardiff Castle.
