A 61-year-old man who was stabbed in Caerphilly town centre last night is now in a stable condition, Gwent Police has said.

The unnamed victim of the attack was taken to University Hospital Wales Cardiff with life-threatening injuries.

The attack happened at around 5.40pm on Cardiff Road near the bus stop opposite Sports Direct.

Police arrested a 43-year-old man on the footpath outside Caerphilly Castle, on suspicion of attempted murder.

Eye-witnesses on social media said he walked down to a bench by the castle and calmly waited for police. He is still being questioned in custody.

The suspect has been named on social media as Evan John from the Aber Valley.

The Welsh Ambulance Service said it received a call at 5.41pm with crews reaching the scene at 5.55pm.

A Gwent Police spokeswoman said: “Officers would like to thank the members of the public who came to the assistance of the victim at the time of the incident. If they haven’t already spoken with police, we would urge these people, as well as any witnesses to the incident, to get in touch as they may be able to assist with enquiries.”

Anyone with information about the attack to call them on 101 quoting log 359 of September 15.
