Caerphilly and District Twinning Association will be hosting a talk on its history, its current activities and its plans for the future at Caerphilly town Library on Thursday, September 29.
The talk, which begins at 7pm, will look back over the 25 years since Caerphilly was twinned with Lannion in Brittany, France, as well as Llanbradach’s twinning with Ploubezre.
All welcome are welcome and refreshments will be provided.
What’s the point of it? Does it produce a product we can sell?
First Question; none; Second Question; No, of course not; But it does cost you and I money to pay expenses of one or two Town Councillors who visit the continent now and then as part of this Twinning Rubbish;.
I’m not sure about the point of it all either. I suppose it does no harm but the futility of twinning is epitomised by the twin of Hay on Wye. As we all know this Welsh town is world famous for being the town of books and is a beacon of culture.
Hay is twinned with Timbuktu, a town in Mali, Africa. For sure Timbuktu was once known for its history and architecture but is now better known for the destruction of its own culture and heritage.
Councillor Williams; As you are a Caerphilly Town councillor, and I am aware you nore any opposition Councillors, to the Nationalists, who effectively `run` the town Council budgets, have ever had any fiscal advantage, of public funds, which it has paid out to its own Nationalist members from time to time, I am wondering if you can give any `positive` advantage to our town by this group, and the public money spent on it, money, which I understand may have been for `clothes` and other expeses when making visits abroad.
If the above situation does not give an honest and accurate description of how Caerphilly Ratepayers money is being spent please can you clarify it.
I also notice from the Town Council Minutes , and been informed by a resident, that the Town Council have given £1,600 to a local Private Small Company recently, can I ask if this is permitted, if it is, there are many other small local traders who could make application for similar grants and donations towards the running and survival of their businesses if they were aware of such a proicess for grant aid from the Town Council.
With regard to the first point I will check with the Town Clerk, what I am certain of is that I have never benefitted personally from council money, the closest I ever came was one free buffet in 2012 – I’m a very ‘low maintenance’ type of councillor.
With regard to the second point you raise I assume that this is money for prizes for an art competition? The Town Clerk guides members on whether donations are permitted or not and in this case we were assured it was.
