Man appears in court over Caerphilly town centre stabbing

A 43-year-old man has appeared in court charged with attempted murder after a stabbing in Caerphilly town centre.

Evan John Samuel Smith appeared before Newport Magistrates’ Court on Saturday, September 17.

Smith, who gave his address as no fixed abode but is from the Aber Valley, did not enter a plea and was remanded in custody to appear before Newport Crown Court on Monday, October 24.

He has also been charged with possession of an offensive weapon, namely a kitchen knife.

A 61-year-old man was left in a life-threatening condition after the attack and was taken to University Hospital Wales in Cardiff with life-threatening injuries.

Police later described his condition as stable.

The attack took place on Cardiff Road, near Sports Direct, at around 5.40pm on Thursday, September 15.

The Welsh Ambulance Service said it received a call at 5.41pm with crews reaching the scene at 5.55pm.

Police arrested a man on the footpath outside Caerphilly Castle.

Eye-witnesses posting on social media said the suspect walked down to a bench by the castle and calmly waited for police.

The Wales Air Ambulance was called to transport medics to the scene and landed on the playing fields near the Twyn School, but did not take the victim to hospital.
