The Tommy Cooper Society has presented a trophy to Bedwas Junior School in memory of their founding chairman, who passed away.

Cllr Angus Donaldson MBE, who was also a governor at the school, was commemorated with a Tommy Cooper trophy which was presented to the school in front of Cllr Donaldson’s widow and two sons.

The trophy was presented to pupil Corey Leggatt, and will be used as an incentive by the school to promote kindess and laughter.

Tudor Jones, chairman of the Tommy Cooper Society, said: “We are so pleased that headteacher Paul Warren, has decided the trophy will be awarded weekly to the pupil who has brought happiness to the school, so our congratulations go to Corey – just like that!”

The trophy presented to Bedwas Junior School was designed and crafted by the late artist James Robert Done – who also sculpted the statue of the Caerphilly-born entertainer in the town centre.

• On September 30, the Tommy Cooper Society presented a life-saving defibrillator to Abertridwr YMCA.

The defibrillator was the eighth to have been donated by the society to centres around Caerphilly County Borough as part of their Tommy’s Ticker campaign.

Each defibrillator costs around £1,000, and the society has teamed up with charity Welsh Hearts to donate equipment to Caerphilly Library, the Visit Caerphilly Centre, Caerphilly Workmen’s Hall, Blackwood Miners’ Institute, Rudry Parish Hall and Bedwas Workmen’s Hall.
