Police appeal after lit fireworks posted through Rhymney letterbox leave resident in hospital

News | | Published: 16:02, Wednesday October 19th, 2016.

Police are appealing for information after a woman suffered injuries from lit fireworks posted through her letterbox in Rhymney.

At around 9.55pm on Tuesday October 18, fireworks were set off and put through the letterbox of a house on Lady Tyler Terrace, in Rhymney.

A 39-year-old woman inside the property was taken to Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil with stomach injuries where she is receiving treatment.

Police say they are “keeping an open mind” as to whether the incident was a reckless prank or attempted arson.

Last week, a firework was posted through a letterbox in Hengoed, but a fitted guard prevented any serious damage.

Rhymney Inspector, Ian Muirhead, issued a warning over the consequences of using fireworks irresponsibly, saying: “I’m urging people to think about the dangers of using fireworks in an irresponsible manner. These sorts of crimes are reckless and what some people think may be a bit of fun can lead to lives being put at risk with devastating consequences for the people living within the home.

“When any fire starts it can spread rapidly which can engulf a house and entrap the occupants in a few minutes.

“I want to emphasise that incidents like these can carry a prison sentence on conviction.

“Officers are currently investigating but if you have any information regarding this incident, please contact us on 101 immediately.”

Anyone with information can contact Gwent Police on 101, quoting log: 546 18/10/16.
