Politicans criticise proposals which could see 350 jobs lost from meat packing factory in Merthyr Tydfil

Proposals to close a meat processing factory in Merthyr Tydfil have been described as a massive blow to the community by local politicians.

Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney’s MP Gerald Jones and AM Dawn Bowden have criticised the news that the St Merryn’s Food Group is looking to move their retail packing operation to its base in Cornwall.

The move could put up to 350 jobs at risk, having operated on the Dowlais site since 1999. 2 Sisters Food Group took over St Merryn in 2013.

Gerald Jones MP said: “I’m extremely disappointed by the news that St Merryn’s has decided to commence a consultation to relocate its packaging arm to Cornwall.

“Whilst there may be business reasons for this proposal, it still has the devastating consequence of 350 potential redundancies in our local area.

“There’s no doubt it’s a huge blow for the local communities here in Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney, and although Wales currently has its highest employment rate in history, there is still much to do to ensure that we keep employers and jobs in Wales.”

The constituency’s Assembly Member, Dawn Bowden, spoke of her concern at the proposal and the impact that the move would have on local communities.

She said: “I have emailed the Managing Director of the company to express my disappointment at this devastating announcement, seeking an early meeting with him to discuss how the Welsh Assembly can work with them to bring about a change of position.

“I have tabled an urgent question calling for a statement at the Assembly on Wednesday from the Welsh Government in response to this announcement.”
