A disused pub in Trethomas, which is set to be demolished for a planned care home, was the target of arsonists last night, Wednesday, November 16.
Two fire crews from Caerphilly attended the deliberate fire at the Ty’n-y-Pwll, on Newport Road, at around 5.40pm, and tackled the fire on the ground and first floors.
The pub, which is the oldest building in Trethomas, is set to be demolished though after councillors recently approved plans to build a 32-bed care home on the site.
At a meeting of Caerphilly County Borough Council’s planning committee, held on Wednesday, November 9, councillors approved an application from Pontcanna Development Ltd to build on the site.
According to a report considered by members of the committee, the planned care home will be a large three-storey building with a “modern largely pitch roofed structure”.
It read: “The accommodation would comprise of a range of service rooms, a reception lounge areas and eight en-suite, self contained bedrooms on the ground floor, a further 15 bedrooms on the first floor with waiting rooms and lounge areas, and nine bedrooms on the second floor with waiting rooms and lounge areas.”
A previous plan to turn the building into a community centre collapsed after the charity behind the scheme could not secure funding.
The Ty’n-Y-Pwll Inn, known locally as the ‘Pyke’, used to be the toll house where tolls were charged for the use of the road between Caerphilly and Newport.
