The Gwern y Domen Conservation Group has won a prestigious award for its efforts in a fight against a 618-home development between Rudry and Caerphilly.
The group won the Sustainable Community category at the Sustain Wales Awards last month.
The group was vocal in its opposition to Caerphilly County Borough Council’s draft Local Development Plan, and has sought to highlight the importance of environmental sustainability through educational events, such as wildflower tours, bat and moth spotting events, and a tea-party in the meadows.
The group has vowed to fight plans being drawn up by developers PMG Limited and Persimmon Homes to build 618 new homes.
Wildlife expert Iolo Williams, who is patron of the group, said: “It is heartening to see local groups standing up for wildlife and their efforts have been rightly rewarded.”
