Local residents are being encouraged to recycle their Christmas cards at Sainsbury’s stores, as part of an initiative to help protect the world’s forests.

Until Monday January 9, customers can recycle their Christmas cards at over 1,000 Sainsbury’s supermarkets and convenience stores throughout the UK, including in Pontllanfraith.

Sainsbury’s will recycle all collected Christmas cards and make a donation to the Forest Stewardship Council UK based on the volume collected in all its stores. Last year, customers donated 98 tonnes, resulting in a donation of over £15,000 to the non-profit organisation to support its work to promote responsible management of the world’s forests.

Collection boxes will be at the front of each store, and customers can also have their cards collected from their own homes when they receive their online shop.

Sainsbury’s Pontllanfraith Store Manager, Alyn Davies, said: “We’ve always had a brilliant response from customers and we hope to collect even more cards this year. The recycling initiative is a great way to support the invaluable work of the FSC and help customers to tackle Christmas waste and put it to positive use”.
